10/21/15 – The inevitable rush of adrenaline, the unavoidable heart pounding, and the inescapable euphoria of answering a question are all feelings felt by the average Hi-Q player. But to fully understand the Hi-Q enthusiast, we must first understand the complex game of Hi-Q. To begin, there are two teams, eight players, and eight buzzers. Each team encounters a series of questions asked by the almighty moderator. Like a panther, each individual strides at the buzzer, hoping to catch the prey, or in this case points. Each question is given 5 points with a possibility of 15 points, if the group as a whole can answer a bonus question. Comparable to the speed of light, buzzing in is a learned skill. When harnessed correctly, the power of buzzing can yield many benefits for Nease. In the end, the team with the most points will take the victory. Ultimately it comes down to one thing; what team can beat the Panthers in speed? The questions asked in Hi-Q vary in complexity. The Panthers strive to answer harder complexity questions with ease. Training day after day, the Nease Panthers work hard to keep agility and stamina up so that we can get to the buzzer quickly. But overall, Hi-Q has a deeper significance than just winning or losing.
As my Language Arts teacher always says “look deeper than just the simple surface of the situation.” When “looking deeper” into Hi-Q, you will see a commodity that is very scarce in the real world. This commodity is the sense of happiness and friendship. The bonds forged in Hi-Q will endure until the end of time itself. Hi-Q elicits the greatness of intellect over anything superficial. Hi-Q allows for us to integrate what we learn in school, while still having fun with our friends. The atmosphere of Hi-Q is one of kindness and gratitude for what we have. Mrs. Goodman has fostered a magnificent atmosphere of friendship that many people go searching for their entire lives. While we are at Nease, we are thankful to have this wonderful extracurricular activity. In this friendly environment, we hope to thrive and build a path of efficiency for future generations to come. I, Ashwin Mahesh, have truly been changed for the better by being a part of this benevolent organization.
